Mendota community URGENTLY seeks assistance

Update from Kathy Morning Star (03/20/99)

Talked to Linda Brown today, and was informed that the Resolution was passed 19-0 through the Government Ops. Committee on Friday. The resolution, in a nutshell, directs that the State do their job, as reflected in this resolution statement: "Be it resolved that the State Historical Society, State Archeaologists, the Council of Indian Affairs, and the MN State Historical Preservation Office are directed to carry out their duties and responsibilities to protect the Native American Traditional and Cultural properties in the Coldwater Spring area as defined and protected by Federal and State Laws. Thereby preventing any further damage to the site." But, since this is not a law that has been passed, there is no protection for the burial grounds, as yet. Even though the resolution has passed through the Government Ops. Committe, it will still have to go to the full House for a vote. And then on to the Senate Government Ops. and Transportation Committees, within the next week and a half. Letters, emails, and phone calls are still very much needed to the House Representatives, as well as the Senate Gov't. Ops. and Transportation Committees. While this is positive news, the Bill has not been heard yet, and won't unless we can get a representative to attach it to something else that will be heard. The Mendota are in dire need of funds, as much money has been spent on the research, documentation, and information packets that were given to all the Representatives as well as flyers that were handed out to supporters and constituents.

The following are the email addresses that Linda identified on 03/07.
