Mendota community URGENTLY seeks assistance

Those arrested and charged from the December 20th raid, had their day in
court today.  All charges were dropped, except for 8 individuals who had
additional charges of obstruction of justice.  Those 8 will have another

Also, this afternoon, the Temporary Restraining Order that was requested
to extend protection of the sites until May was denied.  There is only a
few days until Phase 1 (or the 'walk through) is to begin.

We will update as soon as we hear more.

Judge Peter Albrecht, who yesterday denied the request for the extended
temporary restraining order , called the Mendota Dakota Community's
attorney and has scheduled a meeting for this Friday, the 22nd, for all
attorneys involved in the Sacred Sites issues.  Judge Albrecht said he
wants to discuss a Alternative Conflict Resolution.  

Good thoughts and prayers would be very much appreciated for this meeting
on Friday.

1/16/99 - Here is an updated list of current needs for those occupying the site;
The Mendota Community encampment is still in desperate need.  Our people still only
have one camp stove and one kerosene heater.  They also need full face stocking caps,
gloves, CarHarts (heavy coveralls), snow suits, ski jackets, parkas, winter clothing,
long underwear, RVs, tipis, tents, cement, chain, polypropylene rope, climbing rope
and gear, cobras, kryptonite bike locks, bike cables, padlocks, foam pads, sleeping
bags, boots, wedges, mauls, wood, propane, dried and canned  food, communications
systems (i.e., walkie talkies, 2 way radios, scanners), flashlights, batteries,
a laptop, cameras, and a printer.

Please circulate widely and ask friends and neighbors for what they can spare.
Clothing needs to be in the Large, X-Large, and 2X Large sizes.

Financial assistance is still needed also.
     The Mendota are a non-profit organization and reciepts will be supplied for those
who request them.
